Sophmore Jack Kilton is all smiles holding his morning coffee. This morning he had an iced carmel latte with extra creamy cold foam.

When walking through the hallways before the first bell, a high schooler carrying a drink is more common than one carrying a pencil. Whether an energy drink, a water bottle, or a homemade coffee, it is a recurring pattern at Louisville High School for students to be seen sipping a beverage through class.

It does not matter what type of refreshment, many students find it necessary to have a morning stimulant. In a form sent out, students were asked multiple questions about their morning beverage. Of 60 students surveyed,  58.6% said they bring an energy drink and of these the most popular was Red Bull. 17.1% of students bring coffee, 10.2% bring water, and 6.9% of students said they bring a sports drink like Gatorade. Finally, 6.8% of students said they bring pop.

“When I don’t bring a drink I feel less energized. Even though the coffee I bring only has about 80 milligrams of caffeine, having it in the morning is routine for me, and bringing it in the morning sets my day up for success" junior Noelle Larson said.

Some students even said bringing a drink can make them perform worse.

Sophomore Jack Kilton said, “On meet days for cross country, I don’t bring a drink because it messes with my running.”

Bringing a drink on meet days affects his performance, but that doesn't mean he doesn’t enjoy bringing a drink on regular practice days. Some of his favorite drinks include his homemade coffee, and the Crisp Apple flavor from Bloom.

Though energy drinks are the most common consumed beverage in the morning, coffee is a close second.

“My favorite drink to get at Kozy is the blended Kozy Breve,” sophomore Jack Kilton said.

6.8% of coffee drinkers buy their coffee from the gas station or, more commonly, Kozy. 10.3 % of coffee drinkers make their coffee at home. Students almost unanimously voted that iced coffee was superior to hot coffee.Having a fun drink at the beginning of the day can lift your mood, and set the rest of your day up for success.
