Mitch Shelsta is golfing

Golf is not as well-known as football, basketball, or even volleyball. Not only does this sport have a place for everyone, but it will make you feel welcomed. Though it may not get noticed, these players put in the hard work and are just as competitive as those in contact sports.

The golfers practice every day after school. They mainly go to Ashland to practice, but they also go to Grandpa’s Woods and Bay Hills. A lot of the kids spend time golfing with their teammates or their friends who aren't on the team.

Sophomore Parker McCaulley said, “I get along with all of my teammates. I make small talk about golf. I feel like it makes more conversation with people I don't usually talk to.”

To get prepared for a meet, the golfers like to ‘lock in’ by stretching and getting mentally prepared.

Sophomore Kellen Knutson said, “Sometimes we stretch a little, then we take a few practice swings. If it does not go well, we don't let that ruin our actual meet scores.”

There is at least one meet every week. Sometimes there can be 2-3 a week, depending on how the schedule lines up.

This team is the most special because there are a variety of grades.

“There are 10 golfers, which is a lot more than in the past,” Sophomore Jackson Refior said.

All of them will remember the progress they made throughout the seasons because there is so much improvement made, and how big the team is getting.

Cost is one reason kids might not want to get involved in this expensive sport. However,  the only thing the golfers have to pay for is their clubs. Those are not cheap, but it would cost them a lot more to pay every time they had to get into a course for practice.

Golf is not just a sport that you show up at. Golf is something the players look forward to and want to play. Each year there is improvement and growth, just like this year’s team has shown.
