During 8th period the LA. Lab class poses for a quick picture, though it sounds like an easy task, it took the kids almost 5 minutes to take it.

Many schools don't offer special classes that help students improve. But at Louisville High School there is an elective class that supports students in the areas of reading and writing. This class is called Language Arts Lab.

This year L.A. Lab consists of eight students. In this class students focus on daily edits: Mechanics Monday, Try to Write a Better Sentence Tuesday (T.T.W.A.B.S), Wild Card Wednesday, Thesaurus Thursday, and Fluency Friday.

Sophomore Jillian Muntz believes TTWABS is helping her improve her writing and reading skills.

“ Last week on TTWABS we previewed commas and apostrophes, and there was a question on the Pre ACT asking about it and I felt like I did really well on it, Muntz said.

For Wild Card Wednesdays the class starts with personal reading. Some Wednesdays are an easy day in the class; they even could get a work day if needed. Class gets a little quieter on Tuesdays and Thursdays with the class novel that the students chose at the beginning of the year.

A unique thing about the class is that students do Reader’s Theater, meaning they have their assigned characters and read their parts in funny or more unusual voices. It adds a hint of fun into something many students think is boring.

On Thursdays it is as loud as it can be. Students soon put their books down and go sit around a table to play Apples to Apples or Vocab Jenga.

Sophomores Parker McCaulley, Hudson Johns, and Vicki Loeffelholz have a lot of words to say about it.

“Apples to Apples has a lot of meaning behind it” expressed Johns."It helps us express feelings and learn a lot about each other and how we think about certain topics,” McCaulley added.

Although Thursday is a favorite in this class, Fluency Friday is what helps students get better at sentence formatting.

The lights are dimmed, soft music is in the background and students are writing in journals about interesting topics or experiences.

Though students love to relax they have also built a stronger bond with one another, even claiming it as a sibling relationship. They fight, bond, and laugh like family

“It's just so different now than it was in the beginning..Going from being shy and quiet to now bickering and fighting like

L.A. Lab is a class that students should never be ashamed of taking, or even being a part of. Students build bonds, learn better skills, and become better readers, writers and people.
