On September 2nd, Louisville went head-to-head against Palmyra. All three teams beat Palmyra, varsity for the first time in six years. Winning a tough game against a worthy opponent was a great way to kick off the season!

Going to four sets, they kept the audience on the edge of their seats. Palmyra won the first set 21-25, but Louisville pulled through, winning the next three 27-25, 25-23, and 25-16. A number of things played into the outstanding achievement, including this year’s freshmen, new assistant coaches, and improved team atmosphere.

Varsity starter Noelle Larson stated, “I think we all have faith in ourselves and each other because we've worked really hard this summer and this year so far.”

During summer and into the start of the season, the volleyball team has developed a close bond. Junior Carly Haun said, “We've gotten a lot closer as a team, and I think that helps us play better and play more unified. We…understand each other.”

She states such strong words with absolute confidence—confidence in her team.

Carly states how much she appreciates the new junior varsity coach. She says, “Ms. Mason is really supportive. She really holds you accountable… Some tough love is always necessary at times. So even if she gets on you a little bit, you always know it's coming from a good place.”

Head Coach Amanda Zweiner talked about the new wave of incoming talented freshmen. She stated, “I definitely think the freshman group pushes the upperclassmen to keep getting better.”

Carly compliments Natalie Perrings, a freshman who plays defense for varsity. “Natalie has really stepped up this year. She's been doing a great job with serving and passing, just understanding her position.”

A large part of improving, both as individuals and as a team, is putting in the time outside of practice. Zwiener mentioned the volleyball team's hard work, especially during the summer. She commented, “This summer they set some high goals and competed against very tough competition to set them up for success this year.”

Many factors played into the amazing win. What a great way to start what may be one of the best volleyball season in Lady Lions’ history.
